Challenging Yourself & Trusting Your Work

Ever faced a situation where things didn’t seem ideal, but you pushed forward anyway? That was me, camera in hand, standing at the beautiful Windansea Beach in La Jolla. This wonderful military family was preparing to leave San Diego, and I was honored to capture their memories before their next chapter. The catch? The only time they could do the session was 10:30 AM.

If you know photography, you know this isn’t the best time for beach photos. But I love a challenge, so I trusted my skills and went for it—and the results were stunning.

This session reminded me that while conditions aren’t always perfect, preparation and confidence are key. Sometimes, you just have to believe in the work you’ve put in and go for it!

Why Time of Day Matters for Photos (in Simple Terms)

Let’s talk about why time of day matters so much for photos, even if you’re not a photographer. You know how everyone looks amazing in those golden selfies at sunset? That’s because of golden hour, the time right after sunrise or before sunset when the light is soft, warm, and flattering.

At 10:30 AM, the sun is high, and its light is intense. This can lead to:

Harsh shadows (under eyes, noses, and chins).

Overexposed highlights (bright spots and blown-out skies).

Squinting faces (no one wants that!).

Despite the challenge, I used techniques like finding shade, adjusting settings, and working with angles to create beautiful photos. So, while timing is important, experience and creativity can make a big difference!

Even with the midday sun, this session turned out to be one of my favorites. Windansea’s rocky shores and sparkling water created a gorgeous backdrop. The family’s energy was incredible, and I felt so grateful to document these moments for them. It’s families like this that remind me why I love being a family photographer—capturing memories before big life transitions.
